Writing

Why Write Poetry? * SU08WR101  Ages: Adult
From ancient China, Greece, and Rome to e.e. Cummings, Jack Kerouac and Def Poetry Jam, people have been writing and speaking poetry. Some write out of suffering, some out of joy, some write for the sheer adoration of words. What compels us to commit these words to paper and screen? Our class explores a brief history, styles, forms and subject matter of poetry, as well as what's happening now. We will try forms, fragments and formlessness. We will create expressions, commentary and poetry that paints. We will also discuss publishing, readings and "Slams". Bring writing materials, imagination and an open mind.
